Apple’s 3G iPhone-Faster, Better, Cooler……..Cheaper
By Aditya Rao
It’s clearly been designed by Apple and is intended to be more than just a successor to the iPhone. It’s supposed to be a phone with an identity of it’s own and based on everything Steve Jobs (Apple’s CEO) said about it yesterday in San Francisco at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, it’s easily slated to become the next big thing for Apple.
Apple’s restructuring of their company has often resulted in devices that have changed the world. Examples include the mac, the iPod and more recently the iPhone. It’s a company that doesn’t manufacture too many products but the ones it does are mega stars in their own right.
Clearly Apple wants to take itself to the next level which is why the iPhone 3G is being pushed heavily into the Asian market. On the 11th of July Apple’s newest iPhone will be available in twelve countries including India, Hong Kong and Mexico in addition to the UK.
The new phone will have all the features of the older one with one key difference. It will run on the 3G model.3G is a faster and safer way of networking and connecting to the internet. It provides its user faster and more reliable GPS access in addition to more services than before. While the patented touch screen will remain (Thank God!)The battery problem that Apple encountered earlier has been remedied. The new phone has an average charge life of 10 hours which is very good for a phone with an 8 GB capacity.
The phone will be available in two capacities. An 8 GB variant and a 16 GB variant.
Apple has realized perhaps after a long time that India holds tremendous promise for them. The plan is to break Nokia’s stronghold over the Indian market and take advantage of the world’s second largest mobile market.
It was therefore no surprise when Vodafone and Airtel announced that they will be retailing the new iPhone in India within a time frame of July to the rest of the year. Everything of course depends on demand.
Even this aspect seems to be taken care of. Steve Jobs announced that the phone will retail in the US for $199.Thats about Eight Thousand rupees for the 8GB variant. You can definitely expect the phone to retail at a little more with taxes in India. What that basically means is that you can own a faster, better version of Apple’s earlier iPhone for less than Ten Thousand Rupees.
What this means for the others like Nokia and Sony is the fact that they will have to come up with cheaper and better alternatives on their own if they hope to remain in the race simply because the Asian markets won’t be too stifled if they know that they can own the iPhone for less than Ten Thousand rupees.
Competitors aside, this is a bonanza for the customer. It doesn’t have a huge memory capacity but more than makes up for it with its new plastic back and thinner frame. The new iPhone can be carried in your shirt pocket.
It looks to be another HUGE hit for Apple.
