3G Enters India
The third generation of mobile internet services known as 3G
will hit India later this year. What is good to see is the sense shown by the Telecom ministry to hurry up with the setting up of the 3G infrastructure .The
last time a major revolution in the information sphere arose with the advent of
internet on mobile the government waited a long while to even consider the
prospect of allowing the net on mobiles.
Things have changed a lot since then. For one India has become a major player on the world’s IT services sector. With the outsourcing industry expected to grow by at least 200 billion dollars in the next few years in India ;most of the work being done here cannot rely for long on broadband services while the rest of the World operates on 3G.
3G will undoubtedly allow the Indian IT sector to aggressively create mobile applications on a 3G platform for most mobile operators and mobile companies.
If you’re still wondering what 3G actually is, here’s a simple explanation. It is a technology that is built on combining the features of previous data transfer methods on mobile and takes it a step further. In the beginning mobiles relied on analogous methods of data transfer, which was a time when your mobile might have looked like this.
Over time it changed and it now offers more features and looks how it does now. That’s because the data it shows is not in analog format but digital format.3G is an attempt to allow data in digital format to travel on a wireless interface thus eliminating the need for cables .What this does is not only allow more features and applications but transforms your mobile phone into a secondary computer.
Your mobile can now download songs and movies at the rate of 284 kbps on an average and the future will see that number only moving upwards.
Government telecom companies BSNL and MTNL have already been allotted their respective shares of the spectrum .This not only gives the both of them a faster start at gaining consumers but also ensures that the government can in no way lose out on the initial phase of Indian 3G consumers which is expected to reach a Hundred Million Consumers.
Private telecom companies will also be allowed their own share of 3G spectrum space but they will have to bid for it in a competitive auction to be held in the upcoming months.
If you do decide to avail the uses of 3G then it is absolutely necessary to buy a phone that is 3G enabled. There is however no need to panic because there is a good chance that your existing phone is already 3G enabled. Manufacturers like Nokia, Sony and others have been working to make their existing phones 3G capable, so there is a good chance you can use your existing phone to avail 3G.
3G also brings in the advantage of number portability which means you can change your mobile operator without the need to change your number itself.
In view of this it would be a great idea to buy
Apple’s 3G I phone which will hit India in the last 3 months in association
with Airtel and Vodafone both of which are guaranteed to get their own 3G
spectrum by the year end.
So are you ready to 3G?
