Bharti – The African Safari Has Just Begun…

 

10.7 billion dollars – that’s the amount spent by Bharti to acquire Zain’s African operations. Makes one wonder just to what level a company will go to further itself. Not very long ago, Sunil Mittal, the boss of the Bharti Group had stated that in an article to Forbes Magazine that he was like a Junkie Looking For His Next Fix”. With Zain in Africa, Mittal has got his big fix .In one way Bharti was obsessed with acquiring Zain after the MTN deal did not work out. Now that they have, Bharti’s African safari has just begun.

After a private meeting with officials of the Finance Ministry yesterday, Anil Ambani the Chairman of the R-ADAG group walked calmly into his car flashing a silent grin at the peering eyes of the media. At first the conclusion reached was that this was a routine meeting regarding the gas dispute that he is fighting with his elder brother Mukesh in the Supreme Court. As we now know, this is false. Anil Ambani is now trying to put out a fire that has engulfed his telecom company Reliance Communications (RCOM). One factor has however remained the same; this latest issue promises to become yet another brother vs. brother fight.

The booksof Reliance Communications, the Indian mobile phone group, have come underscrutiny amid claims that the group misreported annual revenues by as much as23 billion rupees (£315 million) last year, possibly to avoid paying licencefees to the Government.

Costs govt Rs 315 crore in wireless and spectrum fees.A special auditor appointed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)has said the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG)-promoted RelianceCommunications (RCom) under-reported gross wireless revenues to the TelecomRegulatory Authority of India(Trai) for the financial years 2006-7 and 2007-8.

A New National Telecom Player

As the telecom pie grows bigger in the country more want a slice of it. The established big boys in the country like Airtel, Reliance and Idea Cellular are wary of developments that have been taking place in the telecom sphere. Just this week, news broke that Telenor has agreed to increase its stake in Unitech Wireless perhaps based on the notion that over the long term it would serve them well. This period has also heralded the entry of a new player in the national telecom market, the company Aircel.
