Reliance Fresh

The party for India’s retail sector is officially over. The credit crunch has quite emphatically hit this blooming sector as well which has left the biggest retailing giants rolling on the floor. Reliance’s consumer cash and carry format ‘Reliance Fresh’ chain of stores is in a state of rollback both from a hiring point of view and opening newer stores across the country. The management at Reliance retail has denied this but information about the same has been doing the rounds and does seem to be very true.

One of the many blogs we read here is India Retail Biz and while I don’t know the team that runs the site, their news analysis is solid and specific to India retail. When I read their article titled Reliance faces another storm; this time it is Uttrakhand! I was struck by the alarming pattern of anti-free trade practices by a select group of traders. I want to urge our readers to support Reliance (even if you don’t like the company) and notify your government leaders to support free trade in retail. India simply can’t have these incidents take place without a strong reaction from the government. Both farmer and business are aligned in this fight against the anti-free-traders which clearly tells me the fight is just.

I came across this article posted by the Indiaretailbiz.com site and had to comment on the seriousness of the situation.

Lots of Indians believe that the retail shops are a good idea as they provide goods at a discount. After all, why pay more when you get it for less at the retail shops?
